Morelife Summer Camp

For 20 years, MoreLife ran a weight loss summer camp for children. The residential camp ran during the school summer holidays, taking children from 8 – 17 years old.

We created a nurturing, safe and supportive environment where the main aim was for campers to enjoy themselves with their new-found friends. Campers were given the opportunity to lose weight in an effective way that also built confidence.

Our Camp offered physical activity and games, lifestyle sessions, day trips and a varied evening entertainment programme. This winning combination delivered success year after year. To date over 1,200 children lost weight on a MoreLife Camp.

Professor Paul Gately, founder of MoreLife Summer Camp, says:

MoreLife has a long history of delivering high quality weight management services for children and young people.  Our flagship and internationally recognised programme is our MoreLife residential weight loss camp.

The costs of such a high quality programme are high and throughout our history of delivering this contract we have received funding from a variety of public sources.  Unfortunately, due to cuts in public services for issues such as childhood obesity, the Camp model is no longer financially viable  and we regret we are not able to run it.

We are looking for alternative financial support for children and young people who suffer with obesity and severe obesity and hope to have future programmes running.“

“Camp helped me gain confidence and meet new people. It was an amazing experience.“

At MoreLife, we know that being overweight as a child can affect confidence and self-esteem. A child who is struggling with their weight may often feel overwhelmed and out of control.

He believed obesity should be addressed differently from how US-Style ‘Fat Camps’ tackled the issue.

He didn’t believe in a strict ‘boot camp’ regime. For him, it was about creating a safe environment where people can explore their attitudes towards food, activity and lifestyles, and gain a better understanding of how to make positive steps towards a healthier future.

Professor Gately says;

“After working on an American weight loss camp, it occurred to me that the traditional view of weight loss was wrong. Its focus was negative, denying people the foods they like and pushing them to do exercise they don’t.

Traditional solutions also seemed to completely ignore why people overeat or are inactive. I decided that there must be a better way. Now, at MoreLife, we’ve developed a very different approach using the latest scientific knowhow and bags of real experience.

Our research and experience showed us that it was important to consider the needs of the people we work with, and focus on giving them the tools, support and knowledge they need to tackle their own weight issues. As I look at our results, it shows we were right, our clients lose weight and most keep it off.”
