Smoking & Pregnancy

Stop Smoking: Fact File

Quitting smoking is the best thing you can do for both you and your baby. Our Practitioners can help you give your baby the best possible start in life.

Stopping smoking and having a smoke-free pregnancy will also reduce the risk of:
  • Complications during your pregnancy and the birth
  • Miscarriage or stillbirth
  • Your baby being born underdeveloped, or born prematurely
  • Your child suffering from asthma, and other conditions such as glue ear and meningitis

By staying smoke-free once your baby is born your baby will have:

  • Fewer coughs, colds and ear infections
  • Better physical and mental development
  • Reduced risk of developing asthma
  • Reduced risk of dying from sudden infant death syndrome

Most pregnant women can also use Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) to help them to quit smoking. Using NRT is safer than smoking because it doesn’t contain tar (all the dangerous chemicals) or carbon monoxide.
